BYU EPP Student Teaching Substitute Requirements
- As permitted by Utah State Board of Education rule, student teachers may serve as substitutes under the following conditions.
- The student teacher must be in the student teaching placement for a minimum of two (2) weeks.
- The student teacher may only substitute in the mentor teacher’s classroom.
- The student teacher can substitute (unpaid) in the classroom while the mentor teacher attends any BYU training or BYU sponsored conference.
- The student teacher is limited to three (3) consecutive days and five (5) days total as a paid substitute in their assigned classroom during other mentor teacher absences. As a paid substitute, the student teacher must be registered through the district’s substitute provider or district human resources department.
- Exceptions for extenuating circumstances may be granted as follows.
- Recommendation by the university supervisor or district liaison and principal in consultation with the student teacher.
- Final approval by the university program coordinator or department chair and the designated district supervisor/director.
